WHO IS ANSELM HODGES?

Private detective Anselm Hodges is the main character of his titular book series. Though world-weary and impoverished, he yet possesses a ruthless tenacity and honest streak that he uses to influence the outcome of his investigations.Working in a run-down, decrepit office in an insalubrious part of the city he calls home, Anselm Hodges is always struggling to attract gainful employment. Even when given a job, his clients rarely pay.Yet despite his constant hardships and an often losing battle to keep up with the rent and other bills, Anselm is never tempted to part with his professional integrity, ensuring he performs each job to the best of his ability. However, his cases often force him into difficult moral dilemmas and he is as loath to dispense with his morality as with his professionalism. Sometimes, this involves making the difficult decision to serve the wider good instead of the client's narrow minded interests. Though it may lose him a client's payment, he recognizes the need to prevent further suffering in what usually are already very difficult circumstances.Served faithfully by his loyal secretary Linda Harting with whom he shares a valued and trusted friendship, Anselm always has at least one person backing his corner in any given situation, and in return he defends her fiercely from harm on the ocassions she is caught in the crossfire during a difficult case. Finally, Anselm Hodges is distinguished by a unique lemon chewing habit. Effectively his substitute for tobacco, he never goes anywhere without a fresh lemon, the sharp taste complementing his sharp mind and wits. This earns him bemusement from some clients and disgust from others, but to part from his lemons is something Anselm will never contemplate.
